We live surrounded by technology. Mobile phones, laptops, Wi-Fi networks, wireless headphones, household appliances… our daily routine is constantly exposed to all kinds of electronic devices. Therefore, it is logical that many people trying to conceive wonder whether these devices can affect their fertility.
As with many aspects related to fertility, the answer is not as simple as yes or no, but it is advisable to consider certain factors. Electronic devices emit a type of very low radiation known as non-ionizing radiation. This radiation does not have the ability to damage human DNA as ionizing radiation from X-rays or radiotherapy can.
In this regard, organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) or the International Commission on Radiological Protection have stated that, as long as levels remain within established safety limits, there is no solid evidence that everyday exposure to electromagnetic fields causes infertility. However, some studies have identified possible indirect effects, especially related to heat and oxidative stress.
Non-ionizing radiation emitted by mobile phones, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth is low intensity. Under normal conditions, the energy absorbed by the body is minimal. That said, prolonged and very close exposure (for example, carrying a phone in the front pocket for many hours) could be associated with increased oxidative stress, slight alterations in sperm motility, or changes in semen quality, although there is still no definitive scientific consensus on this topic.
The potential impact of mobile phones on male fertility has been widely studied. Some research suggests that men who use mobile phones daily or carry them constantly in their pockets may show a slight decrease in semen quality (which is not the same as being infertile). The main hypotheses include increased local temperature in the testicular area or the effect of electromagnetic fields on sperm DNA.
However, it has not been concluded that regular mobile phone use causes infertility. As a precaution, it may be advisable to avoid keeping the phone close to the body for long periods, especially when trying to conceive.

In women, there is currently no scientific evidence showing that the use of these devices affects ovarian reserve or oocyte quality, as the ovaries are protected within the pelvic cavity.
Beyond radiation, the main issue with using a laptop directly on the lap is the increase in scrotal temperature. The testicles require a temperature slightly lower than body temperature for optimal sperm production. Prolonged laptop use on the lap can raise this temperature by several degrees, which has been linked to temporary alterations in sperm production.
For this reason, when trying to conceive, it is recommended to use the laptop on a table and avoid prolonged use on the lap.
Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices emit very low-power radiation. So far, there is no solid evidence that their regular domestic use affects male or female fertility.
Appliances such as microwaves, hairdryers, vacuum cleaners, or induction cooktops generate electromagnetic fields while operating, but within safe limits. Microwaves, for example, are designed to contain radiation inside. As long as the appliance is in good condition, it does not pose a risk to fertility.
The reality is that exposure to electronic devices does not pose a danger to fertility. However, adopting simple preventive measures can provide reassurance, especially for those trying to conceive. These are more about digital hygiene than physical protection:
When it comes to fertility, everything counts. Reducing unnecessary risks and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can significantly support the process, especially when facing difficulties conceiving or undergoing assisted reproduction.
