Fertility specialists stress that the success of assisted reproduction treatment depends on each patient's medical and personal circumstances rather than the time of year. They also point out that summer can offer practical advantages for many families and highlight Alicante's position as one of Europe's leading destinations for fertility treatment.
One of the questions fertility clinics are frequently asked during the summer is whether high temperatures can reduce the chances of achieving pregnancy through assisted reproduction. It is not uncommon for some couples to postpone starting treatment until autumn because they believe the heat may affect their chances of success. However, specialists emphasise that there is no scientific evidence to support this belief.
"There is no medical reason to delay fertility treatment because of the summer. Studies published to date have found no evidence that undergoing treatment during the summer reduces the likelihood of achieving pregnancy when standard clinical protocols are followed," says Dr Manuel Izquierdo, Medical Director of IVF-Life.
Assisted reproduction treatments can be carried out successfully throughout the year. Their success depends on factors such as the woman's age, the quality of the gametes, the underlying fertility diagnosis and the personalised treatment strategy—not on the season in which treatment takes place.
One of the reasons why hot weather has no impact on treatment outcomes is that the most critical stages of the process take place in a carefully controlled laboratory environment. Fertilisation of the eggs and embryo culture are carried out in state-of-the-art laboratories where temperature, humidity and all other environmental conditions remain stable throughout the process.
"Embryos are never exposed to outdoor temperatures. Fertility laboratories are specifically designed to maintain constant environmental conditions all year round. Temperature, humidity and all other key parameters are continuously monitored to ensure that eggs, sperm and embryos remain in the optimal environment at every stage," explains Dr Manuel Izquierdo.
Similarly, cryopreserved samples are stored in liquid nitrogen tanks at -196°C, where storage conditions remain constant throughout the year, regardless of the weather outside. This means that an embryo frozen in August is preserved under exactly the same conditions as one stored in January. In addition, all critical equipment is protected by continuous monitoring systems and comprehensive safety protocols that guarantee stable conditions 24 hours a day.
"We work in exactly the same way throughout the year. Our procedures, protocols and storage conditions do not change simply because it is summer. Hot weather may mean patients need to stay well hydrated or avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, but it has no effect on our laboratory work or on the viability of eggs, sperm or embryos," he adds.

Although there is no better time of year than another to achieve pregnancy, starting fertility treatment during the summer months can offer practical advantages for some patients.
For many people, the holiday period provides greater flexibility to attend medical appointments and undergo treatment with less work-related stress and fewer day-to-day commitments. Some families also appreciate the possibility of spending most of the pregnancy during the cooler months, with their baby arriving in spring or early summer, when milder weather makes outdoor activities and walks with a newborn more enjoyable.
"Every patient has different circumstances. The important thing is to choose the time that best suits their personal and medical situation, rather than waiting for a particular season in the hope of improving the chances of success," says the Medical Director.
Although high temperatures do not affect the effectiveness of fertility treatment, specialists do recommend maintaining healthy habits throughout the process. Staying well hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day, eating a balanced diet, taking medication exactly as prescribed and discussing any long-distance travel plans with the medical team are all measures that help treatment progress smoothly.
They also remind patients of the importance of following their treatment plan consistently during holidays and always adhering to the guidance provided by their medical team.
At IVF-Life, treatment outcomes remain stable regardless of the season. Thanks to a highly personalised approach, cutting-edge technology and an experienced team specialising in complex fertility cases, the clinic consistently achieves success rates above the European average.
For IVF treatments incorporating preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), cumulative pregnancy rates can reach up to 99% in women under 35 and up to 93% in women over 39, based on all transfers of euploid embryos obtained during a single treatment cycle.
Summer is also one of the busiest periods for IVF-Life Alicante, which welcomes patients from across Europe each year who choose to begin or continue their fertility treatment while on holiday. Today, more than 70% of the clinic's patients are international, attracted by the high standards of Spanish reproductive medicine, the expertise of its specialists, the safety of the healthcare system and the opportunity to combine treatment with a stay in a peaceful, well-connected Mediterranean destination.
Excellent flight connections with major European cities, a mild Mediterranean climate and a wide range of accommodation have helped establish Alicante as one of Europe's leading destinations for patients seeking fertility treatment abroad.
