When we talk about endocrine or hormonal disruptors, we refer to a group of chemical substances that originate outside the body and can interfere with the endocrine system by mimicking, blocking, or modifying the action of our hormones. As a result, key processes such as ovulation, sperm production, or embryo implantation may be affected.
In recent years, concern has grown regarding the impact that certain chemical compounds may have on human health. These substances are known as endocrine disruptors and can alter the body’s hormonal balance. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that they may even influence multiple biological functions, including fertility.
Among the most well-known are pesticides used in agriculture; bisphenol A (BPA), which is present in some plastics and resins; phthalates, used to provide flexibility to plastics and commonly found in packaging, vinyl flooring, and cosmetic products; parabens, preservatives widely used in hygiene and cosmetic products; and other industrial substances such as dioxins or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
All these compounds can be found in water, food, packaging, cleaning products, and even household dust. For this reason, exposure is usually chronic and occurs at low doses, making it more difficult to perceive their impact immediately.
The reproductive system is particularly sensitive to hormonal changes. Therefore, any disruption to endocrine balance can place stress on fertility in both men and women.
In women, these substances may cause menstrual cycle irregularities, ovulatory disorders, reduced ovarian reserve, an increased risk of endometriosis, or difficulties with embryo implantation. Some studies also associate prolonged exposure to certain disruptors with poorer oocyte quality or a higher risk of early miscarriage.
In men, however, these substances may reduce sperm count, alter sperm motility and morphology, or cause changes in testosterone levels. In fact, over recent decades a decline in semen quality has been observed in several industrialized countries, something that has been cited as one of the reasons for regulating these substances.
The plastic in packaging can cause hormonal changes
It is impossible to completely avoid contact with these endocrine disruptors, although certain measures can be taken to reduce exposure as much as possible. Some of these measures include:
These are recommendations that can be easily applied in everyday life. Following them can reduce exposure and are particularly important for people who are trying to conceive or who are about to begin an assisted reproduction treatment.
Rather than preventing the possible effects on the fertility of men and women, the goal is to minimize the health risks as much as possible. The key lies in reducing exposure before and during the process of trying to conceive. In this way, potential harmful effects on reproductive health can be avoided.
In general, it is also highly recommended to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular physical exercise, and maintaining an appropriate body weight. It is also important to avoid smoking, which acts as a promoter of oxidative damage, and to undergo fertility testing if pregnancy does not occur after several months of trying (6 months when the woman is over 35 years old and one year if she is younger).
In addition, in assisted reproduction clinics such as IVF-Life, oocyte and sperm quality can be assessed through specific tests, such as anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) testing or sperm DNA fragmentation analysis. These evaluations allow therapeutic strategies to be individualized in order to maximize the chances of achieving pregnancy.
