Becoming a single mother by choice is increasingly common in today’s society. Modern women have broken the taboo that existed years ago, and the absence of a partner is no longer considered an obstacle to motherhood. According to the latest data from IVF-Life, the number of women seeking treatment to become single mothers has risen by 40% in the past five years, confirming this as a clearly growing trend. In fact, the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF) notes in its annual report that these treatments represent 7.1% of all in vitro fertilization cycles carried out in Spain.
“Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in the demand for fertility treatments among single women at our clinics, now reaching 10% of all treatments we perform,” says Dr. José Manuel Gómez, gynecologist specializing in assisted reproduction and medical director of IVF-Life Alicante.
Thanks to advanced assisted reproduction techniques, and within the age limits established by the medical community, becoming a single mother is a fully achievable reality.

“Before choosing the most suitable fertility treatment, it is important to correctly assess the future mother’s fertility status. Not all techniques and treatments offer the same chances of success for every patient,” warns Dr. Gómez.
The most commonly used technique is in vitro fertilization (IVF), which enables fertilization of the egg by sperm in the laboratory. Through an ovarian puncture, the future mother’s oocytes are retrieved and fertilized using donor sperm, which in Spain is always anonymous. This technique requires ovarian stimulation to obtain an adequate number of oocytes that will improve the chances of treatment success.
The embryos develop in the laboratory until they reach the blastocyst stage (day 5–6). Thanks to time-lapse technology, available in all IVF-Life laboratories, embryos are continuously monitored by embryologists without leaving the incubator. This helps maintain optimal culture conditions and increases the likelihood of success.
Another option is artificial insemination—a simple, minimally invasive technique involving the placement of a prepared sample of sperm inside the uterus at the time of ovulation. The goal is for the egg and sperm to meet naturally, allowing fertilization to occur in the fallopian tubes, unlike IVF, where fertilization takes place in the laboratory.
These are the most commonly used options for women choosing solo motherhood, although others are also frequent, such as egg donation—an IVF treatment using donor eggs—and embryo donation, which involves adopting embryos from another couple who have decided to donate them for the purpose of helping others become parents.

The first step is to evaluate ovarian reserve—an essential factor, as egg quantity and quality decline with age, especially after age 35. “It is very common for women to consider solo motherhood after they’ve passed the age of 35, even approaching 40, which can make the process more challenging. However, there are multiple personalized solutions to help find the best path,” explains Dr. Gómez.
In this regard, it is important to highlight the value of egg cryopreservation, a technique that allows women to postpone motherhood by preserving their eggs at their optimal quality. “This technique offers women the ability to plan motherhood according to their personal and professional circumstances, without worrying about age-related egg quality decline. Additionally, cryopreservation may be advisable for women facing medical treatments that could impact their fertility,” adds Dr. Gómez.
Once all necessary tests have been completed, specialists determine the treatment best suited to the patient’s needs, and the donor selection process begins. In Spain, this is regulated by law, ensuring the anonymity of both donor and child to protect their identities.
Donor sperm meets all medical and safety requirements through tests such as semen analysis and blood testing, guaranteeing its suitability. Additionally, donor selection follows phenotypic criteria to match the physical characteristics of the future mother, such as height, build, skin tone, hair color, eye color, and more.
