Reproductive Immunology

Especialista de IVF-Life en consulta de inmunología reproductiva

What is reproductive immunology?

Reproductive immunology is a medical specialty within gynecology and obstetrics that focuses on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of immune system disorders that can affect fertility and pregnancy.

This discipline is particularly important for couples experiencing difficulties conceiving naturally, as a significant percentage of infertility cases may be linked to immunological factors.

How does the immune system affect pregnancy and fertility?

The immune system plays a crucial role in placental formation and embryo implantation. If immune regulation fails, issues such as early miscarriages, fetal losses, or pathological pregnancies can arise.

The immune system is essential for a successful pregnancy, from conception to birth. During embryo implantation, the immune system must recognize and "accept" the embryo, which is genetically different from the mother. This process of "immune tolerance" is crucial to prevent embryo rejection.

In autoimmune diseases, the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues, leading to complications such as implantation failure, recurrent miscarriages, or pregnancy complications like preeclampsia and preterm birth.

It is estimated that 20% of couples experience fertility problems, and a portion of these cases may have immunological causes.

Can a woman with immune problems become pregnant?

Thanks to advanced technologies and growing medical knowledge, women with immune disorders can achieve pregnancy, although success depends on the severity of their condition and the treatment they receive. Conditions treated in reproductive immunology:

Recurrent miscarriages

Women with autoimmune diseases have a higher risk of miscarriage due to immune responses in the body.

Implantation failure

The immune system may attack the embryo, preventing it from implanting in the uterus.

Pregnancy complications

Conditions such as preeclampsia, preterm birth, and other complications are more common in women with immune disorders.

Immune infertility

Inmune infertility occurs when the immune system negatively interferes with reproduction, attacking sperm or preventing embryo development.

DETECTION

How are these conditions detected?

At IVF-Life, we use an immunological test designed to diagnose infertility problems related to the immune system, particularly in cases of implantation failure or recurrent miscarriage.

This test analyzes the distribution and activity of immune cells, such as endometrial NK cells and T lymphocytes, identifying potential abnormalities that affect implantation and embryo development.

With these results, we can design personalized treatments to restore immune balance and increase the chances of a successful pregnancy.

Reproductive immunology treatments

There are several treatments and strategies to help women with immune disorders achieve and maintain a healthy pregnancy, including:

Immunosuppressive medications

Immunosuppressive drugs can reduce the activity of the immune system and prevent embryo rejection.

Specific therapies

Specific therapies involve the administration of immunoglobulins or treatments for specific autoimmune diseases.

Assisted reproduction

Assisted reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) can be useful, especially when combined with immunological treatments.
