The COVID-19 virus is causing much concern and doubts in all areas. From the IVF Life group and the clinics that belong to it, we have compiled the most frequent questions, about the relationship between COVID-19, fertility treatments and pregnancy.

1. What is the chance of getting the coronavirus (COVID-19) if I am trying to get pregnant?

The chance of infection is not increased by trying to get pregnant. However, you should follow the same precautions that have been recommended since the beginning of this pandemic. The only situation in which women would be more vulnerable to infection, would be in cases where her immune system is weakened.

2. What preventive measures can I take during my fertility treatment?

If a patient is in the middle of a treatment, her medical team will contact her to discuss the next steps and if the timing of the treatment is affected. The IVF Life Group is taking all the necessary preventive measures to ensure the well-being of its patients, as well as that of its entire team, with special attention to safety protocols for those patients who still need to receive face-to-face care from our team. This will always be done considering the evolution of the situation and the guidelines of the Spanish Government and the national and international health authorities.

In order to reduce the chances of infection by COVID-19, the health authorities recommend the following:

– Frequent hand washing

– Cover coughs and sneezes with a bent elbow or tissue

– Avoid hand contact with eyes, mouth, nose.

– If any symptoms appear, avoid close contact with other people and contact the health authorities

3. Can I go to my appointments if I am in confinement?

Spain is currently in a state of alarm, which prevents people from entering and leaving the country and therefore affects most journeys to the clinic. For this reason, we offer all our patients the possibility of requesting online appointments with our medical team.

4. I had to postpone my treatment. What now?

When we are forced to postpone our plans, it creates feelings of frustration and anxiety. The Team of the IVF Life Group is at your disposal to support you during this process and provide you with all the information you need so that, as soon as the situation returns to normal, we can  continue with your initial plans together. This is only a postponement to ensure that we have the best conditions to achieve the desired pregnancy.

5. I was tested positive for the coronavirus, what should I do?

You must notify the clinic immediately so that we can act as soon as possible and make all necessary adjustments to your treatment.

6. Will having COVID-19 now, affect my future fertility?

So far, there are no scientific studies or data that indicate that coronavirus infection has any effect on fertility.

7. Does fertility treatment medication make me more vulnerable to coronavirus?

One of the first measures taken by the clinic was to suppress all medications that could weaken the immune system and therefore make the patient more vulnerable to coronavirus.

8. Does the COVID-19 virus affect pregnant women more than others?

To date, there is no evidence that pregnant women face a greater risk of serious illness. While they would not be at increased risk of infection, it is recommended that they follow the same safety measures proposed for the rest of the population.

9. Does the COVID-19 virus have the same effect on pregnant women as SARS?

The SARS-CoV pandemic in 2002 had severe and scientifically proven side effects on pregnant women. In the case of the current COVID-19 virus, cases studied so far show no vertical transmission of COVID-19 from pregnant women to fetuses.

10. If the mother has been infected with COVID-19, does it affect the baby?

So far, in the cases studied, no vertical transmission from mother to baby has been detected. Several healthy babies have already been born; whose mothers had the coronavirus at the time of delivery.
